A glimpse of the new year in the 1 January Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette:
1) "Arkansas politicians munch on raccoon ... For the 73rd time, Gillett, population 691, will hosts its Coon Supper [on] Jan. 9."
2) "'Honestly, it was just an act of God. That creek had so much rain." --Jennifer Tirey of the Illinois Pork Producers Association, on the drowning of 2,000 pigs in flood waters.
3) "Tyson stock up 33% ... Tyson Foods is the top beef and chicken producer in the United States and is third in pork production..."
4) "Tyson's board of directors recommended that stockholders vote against [disclosing] the potential risks of gestation crates."
It appears that a sudden trend toward civilization in 2016 is unlikely. And so, for advocates of "justice for all" the words of Sir Winston Churchill resonate, collectively:
We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills, we shall never surrender. -- 4 June 1940
and individually:
Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never – in nothing, great or small, large or petty – never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. -- At Harrow School, 29 October 1941
Sentiments embodied in the iconic image of a girl and her dog at the siege of Warsaw, 1939:

Remember that for non-humans -- in the wild or captive -- every day is a holocaust. Don't look away, don't spare yourself, and FIGHT ON!
