Forgotten Victims

(Top) some victims of the 1999 hurricane --
a more common outcome than two
(bottom) survivors of Florence, enjoying freedom
for the first time in their short frightful lives.
Hurricane Florence on 14 September 2018 did more than ruining property, stranding pets callously left behind, or causing at least 42 [human] deaths in the Carolinas and Virginia.

An estimated 5,600 Pigs and 3.4 million Chickens and Turkeys in North Carolina alone drowned, according to the state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The final tri-state count would have been  much higher if, that is, the public were privy to the real numbers of throw-away lives.

It may be counterproductive to have people imagining millions of individuals panicked, slowly drowning entrapped in crates and cages unable to swim, run, or fly to save themselves, each with a will to live -- even if they were born to be slaughtered. https://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2018/09/24/650437498/opinion-as-florence-kills-pigs-and-millions-of-chickens-we-must-open-our-hearts

Nor is the long-term environmental damage from thousands of overflowing open-air excrement pits receiving the attention that, say, one demonized coal ash dump did. Imagine if Exxon-Mobil were to produce 100 times more fecal waste every year than the entire human population of the US ... as animal agriculture does with nary a mention from the press.

Then came Hurricane Michael on 12 October, hitting again affected states and others, among them Georgia where an estimated 2 million Chickens and Turkeys "were destroyed in the storm." Wait! Are birds like buildings ... inanimate objects? No silly, they are "crops" like cotton, "assets" like stocks.

Great is the power of “protein growers” so intent on sanitizing their grimy image that “animal” is omitted and troubling statistics supressed. Like for instance, that while families and businesses pay dearly when Nature goes bezerk, the subsidized meat/dairy/poultry industries will not – courtesy of the meat/dairy-addict taxpayer who pays twice for their continued criminal prosperity.
